Section Development

This image was developed in Revit and was used as the base for the development of the final section image. Shown below is another intermediate stage showing another major change from project 2. The change was the result of the 3d image produced in project 2. That image showed the basic form and the multi levels required to connect with the top of the cliff. One of the major features of the current Howard Smith Wharves Site is the sheer cliffs surrounding it and although this building is aimed at creating a ne identity for the site, it is not suppoosed to detract from the natural beauty already evident. It is supposed to enhance the natural features of the site. By stacking the building up the cliff face, you could not longer see the cliffs, therefore inseatd of creating these additional levels as enclosed space, they are now proposed as open space. This will allow the cliff face to still be seen and yet still provide horiztonal platforms for a multitdue of uses from group acitivities such as yoga to family bbq spaces. Protection from sun and rain will still be evident from the level above and the users wil be able to create a special relationship on these levels with the natural cliff face remaining evident. The image below explores this development with columns required to support these horiztonal platforms.

Floor Plan Development




This image shows the development and changes to the ground floor plan from the previous project. The main change is the relocation of the car park to a basement level. Car parks require a large area of space which was not readily available within the Howard Smith Wharves site. If it was retained at ground level, the majority of the site not covered by building would need to be carpark therefore not allowing for any community space or open space. The basement level entry is at the left of the building, entering under the left edge of the sports field under the grandstand seating. The removal of the car park and associated road between the building and the existing wharf buildings has enabled the proposed building to extend closer to the wharves building. The extra room was used to widen the exercise path to a 5m allocation and to increase the size of the foyer area. The removal of the loading dock area of ground floor also gives more room for staff offices in direct relationship with the foryer and reception area.

Green Roof Terracing

The terracing of the green roof above the sporting facilities wouuld increase the connection between the site and the rooftop areas. It would also be efficient in creating another access point for the ten pin bowling centre located on level 3. By situating the terraced seciton on the western side of the building will provide protection from harsh western sun. It has also identified that the majority of site users will approach the building from the city end rather than from the other endd of the site, therefore will be effective in providing options depending on which part of the building they want to access. Show below is the terracing as seen from the Southern elevation and the path which is possible up to the roof area. These terraced platforms will also provide numerous views into the sporting area providing interaction between movement zones.

Seperation and Interaction of Movement Routes

This image was the inspiration behind the treatment of movement zones within the building. As shown in the picture, all of the viens are intertwined and winding throughout each other but they never intersect or are affected by each other. This concept would be effective within my design with pedestrians, exercises and cars all having seperate circulation paths. The designing of these paths wil be based on the structure of veins with none of the movement routes having to stop for or cross another.

Site Creation

The site was modeled in revit to ensure the heights created within my building were relevant to the existing cliff heights. It was also helpful to show the site within the final drawings.

Biomimicry Influencing Form






Despite biomimicry being crucial to the planning of the building, little relevance to this concept was evident in the 3d form of the building created in project 2. These images are in relation to the creation of a facade system for my final building design. The top image show the muscle layer and the different strands it creates. This would be a very interesting facade if applied in such a way that it is interactive and movable by the building's occupants. This would result in a forever changing facade and an increased connnection between inside and outside with the manipulation of views and sunlight control being possible.
